July 4th Weekend, 2003

» » »

The 4th of July weekend took Suzy and I down to the San Juan Range in southwestern Colorado to climb a few 14,000 foot peaks, and for our first day, we bagged Red Cloud and Sunshine Peaks near Lake City, Colorado. Once we completed this combination, we headed over to Ouray, Colorado via Cinnamon Pass through Animas Forks (an old mining ghost town) and Silverton.

The Cinnamon Pass road is four wheel drive, and provides some beautiful alpine scenery. Unfortunately, every Jeep and 4x4 in the western United States was also there this weekend. The shot below of an old mining cabin next to a waterfall, was taken just west on Animas Forks. The next day, we knocked off Mount Sneffels by way of the classic South Slopes Route to complete a great weekend.
